Finley's room....finally :)

Ya know...we tried so hard to have his room finished before he came....but it just DID NOT happen.
And folks say to you empathetically as you tell them your pre-baby goals, "He's not even going to use that room for a while you know"....And you smile and nod, knowing damn well you won't have time once your little bundle arrives, no matter what room he's in, to do anything but take care of that little bundle. That pooping, crying, eating, cuddly bundle of pure and amazing magic. So fast forward to 4 months later and we're finally finished. We put it side for a minute until we could REALLY finish it. We're only waiting for ONE more thing. A rug. We just haven't found the right one yet. wink, wink...We'll post an update later. So when you have talented friends and generous family members, designing a baby room is sort of a piece of cake...so once we re-conveined and saw all the fun things we had to work with the room came together rather fast. A special thanks to Mirna Stubbs, Dean Kube, Lilla Rogers and the studio ladies,  and last but not least, my wonderful mother-in-law, Sandy aka Momsville and my father-in-law, Kevin, aka K-Pop. Our elephant bedding is from Land of Nod and designed by Allison Cole. Thank you Momsville! The "Hello, I love you" bear print by Julia Pott is a fave we've had for awhile and didn't have the perfect place for it until Finley arrived. The adorable alpaca print is Flora Chang. We made the mobile with help from a co-worker of Colin's. Thank you Hanna! There are some Petit Reve prints in there too. I mean, c'mon, Can you blame us? ;) As far as furniture it was mostly Ikea and then we took an old chest of drawers we had in the garage, slapped some knobs on it (lovingly painted by by K-pop). My hubs painted it and voila', good as new.

Frankie!

So I'm kind of obsessed with etsy's stat page. It's a great tool! If your getting a lot of traffic it tells you exactly where it's coming from. I like this because we always feel extremely grateful when someone takes the time to share our work. Folks are busy these days and there is SO much great work out there. If someone is blogging about our stuff we know about it and we can actually get in contact with them and thank them! So long story short...Frankie, an Australian magazine I absolutely ADORE blogged about us and as a result we had 3 sales in one day!!! That may be small potatoes compared to some of you Etsy rock stars but to us it was a big deal :) We were thrilled and we just want to say thanks!
The universe works in weird ways my friends...I have a little field notebook that I keep in my purse and I wrote down Frankie when I first came a cross it months and months ago, just wanting to make a mental note to myself that I loved the mag....well that page just so happened to be flapped open in my purse the day the posted about us. W E I R D.

We're having a BABY!!!

HUGE NEWS!!!! This has been a hard secret to contain. Phew!!!!! So glad we can spill the beans.....
In about 6 months we will have a new member of our family. We are both excited and...well...terrified. But more excited! Colin and I are just realists so of course I'm going to be honest. If you bring a child into the world, raising him or her to be a decent human being is the hardest, most important and most rewarding task you'll ever do.We have one pretty awesome human under our belt so we have some experience. She's off to Chicago about to start college! One bird leaves the nest and another one flies in ;) What an exciting time :)

Monster Draw

Hey folks. Happy Saturday :) Hope your chilling out this afternoon.
So we did the Monster Draw Rally again and had a blast. This year it was part of KC Design Week, which was rad. So basically you have one hour to complete a piece of art and then it's auctioned off. This year the proceeds went to providing a design scholarship to a lucky somebody. It's a little intimidating to draw in front of folks but after awhile you get used to it. They also let you get a head start on the piece before the event. We met some really awesome peeps. A really sweet couple named Melissa and Craig bought my Peru piece but couldn't decide if they wanted it for their bedroom or their daughters. A fellow artist named Eric happened to be from Holland! He and a buddy won Colin's "fight" piece but decided to cut in half so he could took take his half back to Holland and his American bud could keep his here. They added their own layer to the piece with their willingness to divide it. Supah' artsy and supah' coo-el. Yah'! New friends from around da' werld!

Super Fun Family Portrait Commission

Helloooo. How are ya today? Enjoying your Saturday afternoon so far? I just had waffles and bacon so I'm swell :) I'm also really excited to share a project we finished right before Christmas that we've been too busy to share until now! It was another commission from the lovely designer Jennifer Bertrand. I should mention she is debuting an internet radio show about design and other musings. Pretty cool. She asked us to do a family portrait for her lovely friend Violet. Her husband is none other than Frank Black from the Pixies. WHAT???!!! Of course we freaked out and then said yes. Then freaked out some more. We are obviously fans of the Pixies so it was such an honor. Plus we had total creative freedom so we went to town. As we sketched and looked over pics of them we couldn't help but fall in love with their quirky/down to earth family. We tried to capture the essence of the lovely couple and there 5 awesome kids as best we could. Colin had the brilliant idea of doing a family totem so we found out what their fave animals were. We had a blast and feel so lucky to have been able to do this project.

Basquiat, the world just wasn't ready for you.

Jean-Michel Basquiat is an art hero of ours. Colin was introduced to him by his high school art teacher Mrs. Topp. Like any art teacher worth her weight, she was was trying to teach her students that the art world has a huge span of flavors and points of view. That art isn't about drawing something perfectly. It's about expression. Although I learned about him in college I didn't fully appreciate him until I met Colin. There is an amazing documentary called Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child. He really was ahead of his time. Especially in the way that he incorporated pattern, type and poetry. Below is a piece Colin did a little bit ago to honor his hero. Who is your art hero?
